GB0VNU from the former old airfield of RAF Skellingthorpe

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 16/04/2023 by G4STO17/04/2023

I am delighted to report that an enjoyable morning was experienced at the GB0-VNU Special event memorial station held on the former old airfield of RAF Skellingthorpe (Birchwood) on Saturday 15th April 2023. On the 17th of April 1943 SGT John Duncan and his 6-crew from 50 Squadron RAF boarded Avro Lancaster ED 800 VN-C for an operation to the Skoda factory at Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. On their way to the target the Lancaster was attacked by a BF110 and alas was shot down killing all 7 crew. The aircraft crashed into soft land that was riddled with deep mine workings … Continue reading →

Another good day had at the International Bomber Command Centre.

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 05/09/2022 by Andy Gibbons07/09/2022

On Sunday the 4th of September the club was once again at the International Bomber Command Centre for their Wings and Wheels show. Les G1LQB myself and Stuart 2E0SFK went over on the Saturday afternoon to set up the Coleman shelter and our usual pair of Clarke Masts with a Colinear on one and a half wave end fed strung between them. As usual everything was ready for us and we got a warm welcome from the IBCC staff. On Sunday morning the team turned up to set up the rest of the station with those above being joined by … Continue reading →

A great Weekend was had by all the Members who attended the International Bomber Command Centre 1940’s Weekend Special Event Station on the 12th, 13th and 14th of August.

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 18/08/2022 by Andy Gibbons18/08/2022

We arrived on the Friday morning to be given a warm welcome by the IBCC staff as always. Everyone was soon hard at work in the very hot weather setting up the army tent and station in time for the event opening at 1pm. The Club setup a fairly simple station just a half wave end fed between two Clarke masts and a colinear on the nearest mast for VHF / UHF. The station was soon setup and ready to welcome the public to the tent. In addition to the SES we had our normal bathtub CW key to computer … Continue reading →

Poacher Day 6

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 05/08/2022 by G4STO05/08/2022

You wouldn’t think adults could have so much fun with the younger generation, well they can, the age gap didn’t get in the way and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, see the beams on the faces of some of the youngsters. It is sad but Poacher has come to an end, apart from clearing up on Saturday. Volunteers today included Andy M0IYE, Les G1LQB, Stuart 2E0SFK, Marc M7DEU, Steve M5ZZZ, Graham M1DHV and Pam G4STOall from LSWC and Barry G4DBS and Tony G4GNC from RAF Waddington ARC and we roped in Adrian M6RSF from the Scouting fraternity to give us … Continue reading →

Day 5 of Activities at Poacher

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 05/08/2022 by G4STO05/08/2022

People say Morse Code is old fashioned and no longer popular, if our experience at Poacher is anything to go by it is still very popular. After the talk on amateur radio from Les G1LQB, many of our visitors wanted to start their practical amateur radio experience with Morse and Andy M0IYE and Martin M0TNM were both kept busy demonstrating Morse and the Scouts and Guides enjoyed sending their names and other messages; doesn’t look like a dying art, like that larger, Morse can get through where other modes cannot!! Barry G4DBS, Marc M7DEU, Graham M1DHV, Stuart 2E0SFK were also … Continue reading →

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 03/08/2022 by G4STO05/08/2022

From the smiles on the faces of some of the Scouts and Guides you can see that an enjoyable day was had by our visitors. As for our volunteers they certainly enjoyed their time explaining amateur radio and Morse code , tuning the bands looking for 25 different stations and helping scouts and guides send Greetings messages. Our regular volunteers were present, Andy M0IYE, Steve M5ZZZ, Stuart 2E0SFK, Les G1LQB, Graham M1DHV, Andy M0KED, G3VEV, M0TNM, M7DEU and G4STO and today we were joined by Tony, G4GNC from RAF Wadding ARC.

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 02/08/2022 by G4STO02/08/2022

Today was the 2nd day of activities for the Scouts and Guides and we weren’t disappointed, 30-40 were greeted by Les G1LQB who briefly explained the hobby. Bob G3VEV and Andy M0IYE demonstrated CW, Barry G4DBS, Mark M7DEU, Steve M5ZZZ, Stuart 2E0SFK, Graham M1DHV, Mary G6SWZ, G6EWP and Pam G4STO were on hand to help ‘tune the bands’ to get 25 different radio stations and to talk to the Scouts and Guides when we couldn’t find anyone further afield.   One station that was worked by Stuart was SC22JAM, Stephan in Sweden who is also running an International Scout Jamboree in the … Continue reading →
