People say Morse Code is old fashioned and no longer popular, if our experience at Poacher is anything to go by it is still very popular. After the talk on amateur radio from Les G1LQB, many of our visitors wanted to start their practical amateur radio experience with Morse and Andy M0IYE and Martin M0TNM were both kept busy demonstrating Morse and the Scouts and Guides enjoyed sending their names and other messages; doesn’t look like a dying art, like that larger, Morse can get through where other modes cannot!! From the smiles on the faces of some of the Scouts and Guides you can see that an enjoyable day was had by our visitors. As for our volunteers they certainly enjoyed their time explaining amateur radio and Morse code , tuning the bands looking for 25 different stations and helping scouts and guides send Greetings messages. Our regular volunteers were present, Andy M0IYE, Steve M5ZZZ, Stuart 2E0SFK, Les G1LQB, Graham M1DHV, Andy M0KED, G3VEV, M0TNM, M7DEU and G4STO and today we were joined by Tony, G4GNC from RAF Wadding ARC.

Today was the start of activities for the Scouts and Guides at Poacher, we had about three dozen showing an interest in amateur radio. Les G1LQB, briefly explained our hobby to our visitors and Andy M0IYE demonstrated CW and Scouts and Guides then had a go at sending their name in Morse code, this was followed by sending ‘greetings’ messages with Andy M0KED, Barry G4DBS and Graham M1DHV. Cars all loaded we set off for Poacher at around 10 o’clock this morning. Work started on the receiving aerials and then we moved over to the masts where we have a fine array of aerials. We have the TH5 (I think that’s what it is) and a co-linear for 2M and 70CMS. 86% of the club missed a fun filled afternoon getting ready for Poacher, Lincolnshire’s International Scout and Guide Jamboree which is once again being held on the Lincolnshire Showground. Scouts and Guides aged 10-17 inclusive from around the world can attend Poacher and we anticipate between 400 and 500 will visit the Lincoln Short Wave Club marquee to see what amateur radio is about. In readiness for the Club going to Poacher 2022, Andy M0IYE, Les G1LQB, Steve M5ZZZ, Graham M1DHV and David M6OYN got the ‘big’ tent out to make sure all parts were there. It took a fair time to put the bits together, all tent erectors were novices at the job, but they got there in the end. They didn’t put the canvas on, they knew where that went.
