GB70DAM Special Memorial Station.

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 25/05/2013 by M5SJM27/10/2022

As most of you are aware 16-17th May 2013 was the 70th Anniversary of the Dambusters raid. Steve M5ZZZand the dedicated few usually run GB5DAM but this year we felt we needed a more significant callsign and after much wrangling Steve received the NOV for GB70DAM. The station was set up and ready to roll by 11am with Bob G7AVU kindly making a 23cm stream possible so people all round the world could watch live via the GB3VL stream on the BATC website. At the peak on the GB3VL stream we had 2000 viewers!! The first contact from RAF Scampton to … Continue reading →

Lincoln Short Wave club Wins RSGB National Club of the Year

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 21/04/2013 by G4STO27/10/2022

We arrived at the Institution of Engineering and Technology just after 11 a.m. after climbing 193 steps to get out of Covent Garden underground, apparently that is equivalent to 15 storeys, for the 86 Annual General Meeting of the RSGB. The AGM was over quite quickly and was followed by the presentation of the various awards the RSGB Club of the Year being the last to be presented.   In third place was Warrington ARC Region 3, in second place Newbury and District ARS Region 9 and in first place Lincoln Short Wave Club Region 13. In the top photo from … Continue reading →

Refurbishing a Linear Amp (Part Four)

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 17/04/2013 by G4XFC17/04/2013

After serious thought on the layout of the components on this Linear Amp especially the placement of the filament transformer and the position of the RCA 813 valves for cooling, I decided that the best thing to do was to remove everything and reposition it better within the chassis. Initially my thoughts were to sort the amp out and get it working keeping the same layout, but as I progressed I was not happy with the layout, so this has now actually turned into building a 1kw Linear Amp from some recycled parts as I am now modifying a lot … Continue reading →

Refurbishing a Linear Amp (Part Three)

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 12/04/2013 by G4XFC12/04/2013

Because of finding dangerous faults during this project, this Linear Amp was not a refurbishment but a complete rebuild. I would advise others not to do this work unless they are experienced in what they are doing, as inexperience could result in DEATH as LETHAL VOLTAGES are involved. For reference, this linear is not pretty and is being brought back to life as a working project and will only be used safely in my shack, it will not be entered into any beauty contest. I changed the way the valve bases had been fitted to provided better ventilation by removing … Continue reading →

Used Equipment Sale

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 11/04/2013 by G4XFC27/10/2022

It was a successful well attended evening at the Village Hall in Aisthorpe for the Lincoln Short Wave Club Used/Surplus equipment sale (some junk), with our resident auctioneer Bob G7AVU trying to extract the last penny from the bidders. As usual there was a lot of humor with the usual suspects trying to wind Bob up, and people frightened to scratch their head as Bob would take this as a bid. Steve M5ZZZ was running round the table trying to find the items for Bob to sell and at times struggled to find the items (if only they had been … Continue reading →

Refurbishing a Linear Amp (Part Two)

Lincoln Shortwave Club Posted on 09/04/2013 by G4XFC11/04/2013

Refurbishing the Linear Amp was still in progress, and because I was changing the old filament transformer for a proper center tapped transformer suitable for the amplifier, I had to change the circuit to take this into account. Another modification to the amplifier was the cathode bias circuit as the old circuit did not have one. R5 is a 50K 10 Watt resistor that biases the valve at cut of when not transmitting keeping the valves cooler and D5 is a 5 volt 10 Watt Zener Diode which biases the valve for transmission. For those not familiar with the grounded … Continue reading →
